A father and daughter celebrate oral hygiene month by brushing their teeth together

October is officially Dental Hygiene Month and is the perfect time to recommit to your oral health! Maintaining excellent dental hygiene is the cornerstone of a radiant smile and wellness overall. Continue reading to learn seven essential oral care habits to honor this month and carry you through years to come.

1. Consistent Brushing

Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride-enriched toothpaste. Ensure you brush for two minutes each time, covering all tooth surfaces and your tongue. Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush every three to four months! It will build up bacteria and wear out over time.

2. Floss Daily

Daily flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gumline. Gently work string floss or floss stick between your teeth and move it up and down against the tooth to remove plaque. Perhaps this is the year you invest in a water flosser?

3. Rinse with Mouthwash

Use an antimicrobial or fluoride mouthwash to help kill bacteria and strengthen your teeth. Mouthwash that uses alcohol as a base kills all bacteria (including the good ones) and dries out your mouth.

You don’t have to use the wash every day, warm tap water will do, but the added cleaning from mouthwash is a welcome addition to your routine.

4. Maintain a Balanced Diet

Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy products. Limit sugary and acidic foods and beverages, which can contribute to tooth decay. Many people don’t think about the nutrients they consume each day. It’s not just about calories! The vitamins and minerals in these essential foods will help keep your smile strong.

5. Drink Lots of Water

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, as it helps maintain a moist environment in your mouth and washes away harmful bacteria.

6. Avoid Tobacco Products

Smoking and using smokeless tobacco can wreak havoc on your oral health and lead to conditions like gum disease and oral cancer. If you were looking for an excuse to quit for good, Dental Hygiene Month is an excellent time to seek support.

7. See Your Dentist Regularly

Schedule and attend regular dental checkups and cleanings at least twice per year. These visits allow your dentist to track your progress, catch and address issues early, and ensure your oral health is in top shape.

By incorporating these habits into your daily routine, you can celebrate Dental Hygiene Month all year round. A healthy, beautiful smile can be achieved and maintained with a simple routine, and a will to be at your best!
